Olympiad preparation guide for Class 1 and 2 with Olympiad Prep Workbook

⚡ In short

How Olympiad exams work for Class 1 and 2, the paper pattern, sample Maths, Science and Reasoning questions with answers and a 6-week plan to prepare without stress.

Your child’s school has sent home an Olympiad form, and suddenly you have questions. Is Class 1 too early? What kind of questions come? How do you prepare a 6-year-old without turning it into stress? This guide answers all of that, with sample Olympiad questions for Class 1 and Class 2, a simple 6-week plan and tips for exam day.

What Are Olympiad Exams for Class 1 and 2?

Olympiads are national-level multiple-choice exams that test thinking, not just memory. The best known for young children are the Maths Olympiad (IMO), the Science Olympiad and the English Olympiad conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF), along with other organisers’ exams that many schools take part in.

  • How you register: Through your child’s school. Parents usually cannot register a Class 1 child directly.
  • When: Level 1 papers are usually held in school between October and December, on a date the school chooses from the organiser’s list.
  • Format: A one-hour, pen-and-paper MCQ paper. Children mark answers on an OMR sheet.
  • Level 2: For SOF exams, the second level starts from Class 3, so for Class 1 and 2 the Level 1 paper is the whole exam.

Dates and rules can change each year, so always check your school’s circular and the organiser’s official website.

Is Class 1 Too Early for an Olympiad?

Not if it is treated as a fun challenge. The questions are based on the school syllabus but ask children to apply it: find the pattern, spot the odd one out, solve a small picture story. That kind of thinking helps in everyday school work too. The key is no pressure on rank. For a 6-year-old, the real wins are learning to read a question carefully, sitting for an hour and getting comfortable with an OMR sheet.

A 6-Week Olympiad Preparation Plan

Twenty minutes a day, five days a week, is enough for this age.

Week Focus What to do
1 Understand the paper Read the syllabus together; try 10 easy questions; explain how MCQs work.
2 Numbers and operations Place value, addition, subtraction, before/after, number patterns.
3 Logical reasoning Patterns, odd one out, analogies, grouping, mirror images.
4 Science and the world around Plants, animals, body, food, seasons, safety.
5 Everyday problems Picture word problems with money, time, measurement.
6 Mock tests Two or three timed mock tests on an OMR sheet; revise only the mistakes.

Tips That Work for Young Children

  • Read the question aloud together. Most mistakes at this age come from not reading carefully, not from not knowing.
  • Use real objects. Coins, blocks and a toy clock make money, counting and time questions easy to understand.
  • Teach elimination. “Which answer is surely wrong?” is a powerful habit for MCQs.
  • Practise the OMR sheet. Filling bubbles neatly and in the right row is a new skill for a Class 1 child.
  • Do one timed test. Sitting for an hour is the hardest part. A home mock test builds stamina.
  • Celebrate effort, not rank. A child who enjoys the first Olympiad will want to try again next year.

Books That Build Olympiad Skills

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Class 1 child appear for an Olympiad?

Yes. SOF Level 1 exams such as the Maths and Science Olympiads are open from Class 1. Registration is done through the school.

How many questions are there in a Class 1 Olympiad?

It depends on the exam. For lower classes, papers usually have around 35 multiple-choice questions in one hour. Check the latest pattern on the organiser’s website.

Is there a Level 2 for Class 1 and 2?

For SOF exams, Level 2 is held only for Class 3 and above. For Class 1 and 2, results and awards are based on the Level 1 paper.

How should I prepare my child for the Olympiad?

Go through the syllabus, practise 15–20 Olympiad-style questions a day, focus on reasoning and word problems, and take two or three timed mock tests on an OMR sheet in the last week.

Which book is best for Class 1 and 2 Olympiad preparation?

Pick a book with chapter-wise MCQs in Maths, Science and Reasoning plus full mock tests. Our Olympiad Prep Workbook for Class 1–2 includes all three subjects, 3 mock tests, an OMR sheet and hints. It is independent practice material, not an official book of any exam body.

My child gets nervous in tests. What can I do?

Make practice feel like a game, do a full mock test at home so the format is familiar, and tell your child that the goal is to try their best, not to get everything right.

Start Small, Start Today

An Olympiad in Class 1 or 2 is a chance to enjoy thinking, not a race. Try the sample questions above with your child tonight. If they enjoy it, add 20 minutes a day with the Olympiad Prep Workbook.
